Do they go on the bottom side of the two parts facing towards the crank between the part and the block? At each end? Near the felt strip?

The felt plugs go on each end of the whitemetal block. The gaskets go on the top, one at each end so that teh bolt-holes line up, and following the contour of the metal. The pan gasket takes care of sealing the bottom.

The four go on the two aluminum (or potmetal or whatever they are) inserts at either end of your crankshaft, where it passes through the end wall of the block. The two odd-shaped ones are at the rear and go between the upper and lower halves of the rear main seal retainer.

Vic, they go between the cast white metal halves at the front and rear of the crankcase.
