I just recently finished rebuilding my tractor and went to start it up and no dice. It has spark (the jolt through my finger verified that one lol), and it has gas because the spark plugs are wet. I don't have a timing light so I'm wondering if the timing may be off. I put the distributor on and aligned it like the book said. Once I had the correct advance set on the engine I rotated the distributor till the contacts just start to open and tightened it down. I did this and all I can get out of the engine is soft popping and farting and it is going back through the carb and out the air tube. I was wondering if the distributor should be set so that at the correct advancement the points are just about to close. This would make more sense to me. I don't know I guess I better just go buy a timing light to rule that one out. Anyone had a similar problem?

El Toro shoot me an email if you read this JBlavl@aol.com. I lost yours and we haven't talked in a while.

Boy don't I feel silly. I almost think I did this once before too. Somehow I managed to have the timing off 180 just like you guys said. DOH!! Runs now but I have to figure out why the throttle is so sensitive. Put a new governor in it and prob need to adjust the linkage I'm thinking. Anyway I feel better now. I appreciate you guys being there for me!

Just a simple thought. You don't say what the tractor is, but are you sure you were at TDC on the compression stroke when you set up your static timing? If you were at the top of the exhaust stroke your timing would be exactly 180* off

Could say what tractor you have-- a H, M, 400, Cub? About what year? Back fire is way advance indication- intake valve open on spark. Plug wires in right order? Double check distributor set up- was a couple threads on having distributor 180 degrees off. RN
