Broght my H home from the farm last week. It had been sitting since Christmas, maybe run once for just a few minutes since then. When I picked it up, it started right up, and seemed to run ok, just drove it a few yards to the trailer. At least I didn't notice a miss. Yesterday I started her up and seemed to notice a slight miss. Put it in gear and definately notice something wasn't right. This is a completely rebuilt motor, everything that could be done to it was a little over a year ago, with maybe 5 hours on it since. Pulled back in the drive and started pulling plug wires. 1, 2, and 3 were obviously firing well. Number 4 was it, but it's not dead. As I put the wire close to the plug a good blue spark was jumping and the miss was less, but still there. Does this sound like a sticky valve? I'm going to check comperssion and valve lash and retorque head, (which I did three twice after rebuild). These are the things that make sense to me and come to mind from just having learned a little from listening to everyone here. Any other ideas before I head out?

Thanks,

B

I would replace that plug first. I have seen morethan once a plug that is firing butnot firing right. We had a cub last year that was doing .the same thing you are having. Drove my uncle crazy. I pulled up with a new plug put it in and drove it around no skip.

take off the valve cover to see if the valves are coming all the way up.If they look like they are, loosen the rockers and put air pressure into the cylinder. This can be done with a good rubber tipped air gun or a fitting that goes into the spark plug hole. You can make one from an old spark plug or buy one from an auto parts store.Be careful as you are putting air in the cylinder because the engine will turn over part of a revolution, put tractor in neutral. If any air comes out of the carb or exhaust, you have a valve problem.

It's not unusual to see a spark when the plug is out if the cylinder but find it's not firing under compression. I'd clean the points and check the distributor cap first, then run it at night and see if you see a wire arcing. A timing light would show if it's firing.

Hey Guys,

Just noticed that when I have the wire off but close enough for spark to jump to the plug that it runs normal. Put the wire on the plug and it misses. New wires and had it in the garage where it's fairly dark and don't see a spark jumping off the wire. Don't see how the spark could jump to the plug and be good but not send spark through the wire when connected. Guess it isn't making good contact, but would think it could jump to the plug. At least it isn't anything too dire. Gonna switch wires, I'm sure it's that or the plug.

Now, something that is a little more serious. Pulled the valve cover off and I've got a stud weeping coolant. Think it may need some thread sealant silcone stuff. What exactly is it that I should use for that?

Thanks,

Brian

when your holding the plug wire away from the plug, and the miss smartens up is because your making the coil put out a hotter spark.when your tractors flooded hold the coil wire out a bit and she will fire right up.

Once in a while my H will act up after running for a little bit. It fires right up and runs great for a little while, but then will sputter and act horrible. It usually is moisture in the distributor cap. One place to look is on the under side of your oil fill cap and see if it has any condensation. I usually just pull the cap, rotor and backing plate off and let it dry out and it works fine. I have a feeling the problem on mine might be the vent tube going to the air cleaner might be plugged up and not letting the moisture dry out.
