Farmall 200 ID plate

I had delivered a 100 and a 200 the other day, and for buying site unseen they seem OK mechanically, but cosmetically they need some help. Firstly the 200 had a fertilizer attachment on each side and after removing it the tractor ID plate is almost eaten up and unreadable. The casting letters are A, does that make it a 55 or 56? I also need to purchase a fair bit of tin, grills and hoods. What are my options here? Thanks...Darald

1955. I have a 230 and the plate was close to unreadable,(Bad place to put the plate) but I luck out. Grill is the hardest to find in good shape and can be costly and the only part available new for the grill is the bottom, You can buy the hood new if you cannot find a good used one. Because the grill is in so many parts spot welded to together, you can go to the salvage yard and take a couple grills and make one if you have the time.

A is for 1955 but thats the date part was cast, not the date tractor was built. So the tractor could be a 55 or 56 model. If several date codes are near the last months of 1955 a 56 model is likely. If you have the engine serial # I think there's enough IH record information to find out what month and year the tractor was built.

The casting code on the trans cover is August and the front wheels are June and October, I haven't looked for any others yet. What if any casting would be made closest to manufacture? I will check the engine serial # and post it. How do I go about getting a new serial # for the tractor. Thanks again...Darald

Unless a casting was replaced sometime the tractor would be assembled sometime after the latest casting code date. Posting some serial numbers that may be in the area of your tractor.
Month is first, year next, first chassis serial # built that month, followed by the first engine serial number installed in a tractor that month.
oct. 55--8996--17166
nov. 55--9549--20011
dec. 55--10232--22004
jan. 56--10904--24697
feb. 56--11600--26588
mar. 56--12686--28537
If tractor has the original engine see which month the engine serial # falls in. Tractor serial # would be somewhere between the first chassis serial # of the month and the next month it falls in. IH probably counted tractors made the last 2 months of 55 as 56 models.

Is any of the plate left? If so you can take a lead pencil and a sheet of paper and use it bring out the number. or just color the plate with the pencil.
