I have a "51 Farmall M with a Mitsubishi alternator connected to an external voltage regulator. I accidentally left the ignition on night after it wouldn"t start. Later, when I hook up the thick red wire to the alternator B+, it sparks, indicating that it"s drawing current. Could I have blown the diodes in the alternator by leaving the current on? |

| I took the alternator to a shop and the diodes were toast, but he can fix it. Thanks all. |

| I forgot to mention that I also hooked up the jumper cables backwards when attempting to charge the battery. It was then that I noticed the wire leading to the alternator was getting really hot which is why I disconnected it from the alternator. After that, I noticed the wrong polarity and set the jumpers correctly. Not the dumbest thing I've ever done. |

| You fried it the moment you hooked up the jumper cables back wards no questions asked I know because yep I have done it in the past and it takes about 1/100 of a 2nd to fry and alternator if hooked up back wards. |

| | Well, leaving the ignition switch on wouldn't fry your diodes. But hooking up the battery jumper cables backwards could have. |
