PTO Question

We have been going through PTOs on several of our tractors, mainly with our TMR mixer. We have been putting new clutch packs in ourselves, and adjusted the pressure. Question is, is there more to the valve assembly that should be gone through? Seems like we replaced the clutch packs and adjusted the pressure, yet alot of the time we have to run the RPMs higher to get the PTO to engage. And then the PTO clutch goes, usually burns itself on but the last one now slips. If we replace the the clutch pack and adjust the pressure are we good, or is there more in the valve assembly that we should go through? or do we need to do a better job adjusting the pressure? Thing is, we have replaced them multiple times on our 1206, 886, and 3588, but never on our 1066, and it still runs the mixer fine, even at idle. Are we doing something wrong? thanks in advance. Doug

Sounds like clutch piston seals need to be replaced, valve possibly worn also is pto pump pickup tube screen clean.Another thing put in largest number of discs in clutch.Scott

Well with out checking it myself here i am only guessing . Like Scot said use the Hd. clutch pac with the 7 and 9 , 7 friction disc and 9 plates . Pull it all the way down and check the teflon seals and the housing for ware . And when setting pressures make sure that the hyd. fluid is at operating temp 150 degrees or warmer . Check the engagement pressure as well as the lock up pressure and set the pressures up On the 886 set it to 245-260 and the 1206 i would set it at 240 to 270 and on the 3588 260 -280 . My 806 is set at 260 hot and cold she is bumping 290-300 the 706 is set at 250 and the 1066 is at 280 and we have her pushing well over 200 Hp, and that is the choppen tractor and i do not think that a mixer wagon is as hard to run as chopping corn in third low when the corn is two to three feet taller then the H/S wagons are . I have only had a problem with two I H PTO's and oth were on tractors running Big square balers and it was not a clutch pack problem it was from PTO shaft chatter on the turns and it would shake the clutch pack snap rings out on both tractors , one was a 1468 and the other was a 1568 . About drove me gooffy To fix that problem i ended up using a piece of key stock and tack welding it in between the ends of the snap rings .

I would do a close inspection of the oil pick up tube and seal. It is very easy to put a little bend in the tube while removing the PTO assembly which can leave the tube a little loose in the clamp. That allow the tube to move and air to enter around the seal. Air entering the pump will cause pressure problems which can lead to early clutch pack failures.

The cure for this problem is to braze the clamp to the tube so that it stays in the correct position and then install a new seal. Make sure the seal lip is installed with the lip to the rear. You are trying to seal out air rather than seal oil in the PTO unit. I have seen some where two seals have been installed to help assure that there is no leakage.
