Why was the M so much shorter than the H? I have never had a good answer to this question and to be hoenst every time i look at my H and M it kinda makes me wonder. Gramps answer was "who the hell cares they both worked" thanks-Ted

I think it is an optional delusion.
They were designed to function with the same loaders, cultivators, corn pickers, and many other attachments. The M is 2 inches wider at the frame rails, and much more "masculine" in stance. But the M is not shorter. JimN

ok guess i never had them side by side..just glanced at both of them it does give that illusion...now i can finally sleep instead of waking up saying it's shorter it's shorter...and my wife saying no kidding ha ha j/k thank ya fella's-Ted

Actually the H is 125" long and the M is 133". the M is also 4 inches taller at the steering wheel....got the info out of Fay's IH databook

Guess someone needs to actualy measure them sometime. Even original IH operators manuals don't agree on the wheelbase or lengths. Other books or data don't also.
1941 manuals for both tractors list the wheelbase for both at 90 inches and both the same length at 126.75. Some later manuals list wheelbases from 88.25 to 89.75 for them with narrow front. length for both is longer also.
MD tractors are longer than gas M. Some dual wheel narrow front bolsters had the angle changed that resulted in some wheelbases being slightly different.
