706 diesel timeing

Remove the rectangular plate from the injector pump, it has two countersunk head screws and all the fuel runs out. Turn the engine to whatever the spec calls for on the front pulley & pointer. When you have the engine on #1 compression two marks shown in the timing window (the plate you removed) should be aligned or nearly aligned. If not rotate the pump to line them up. You must have the engine turned to #1 not #6 to see both marks. Now when you have it in time replace the timing cover plate and fill pump with fuel by removing the return line pump fitting and pouring fuel into the pump. The primer pump will not fill the injector pump and the engine just won't restart unless the pump is nearly full of fuel.
