Farmall 706D piston grooves

I am working on a 706 Diesel with a cracked liner. Ready to replace the liner so I was wondering about reusing the same pistons with new rings. The pistons look really good but the top ring groove is a little loose. Engine was over hauled approximately 2000 hours ago. My dad which now is in his 70's used to use ring spacers for a tractor that was just a going to be a helper tractor. One that would see easier duty. This will be one of those tractors. Any Idea's guys on ring spacers?
 
well the old guy that owns it doesn't really want to put that much money in to it. You can still see the cross hatch in the bores. But obviously you can use a broken one.. just asking.. I suspect if I just put rings in it will last as long as the old guy.. I take it I am fixing it up for his sale if you know what I mean...
 
It's not that difficult to space it back to spec, if it's just a little loose you can trim the groove in a lathe to fit just right with the spacer, or just go to a wider ring

The cost of doing that repair is going to be the same as far as the labor and time involved. The cost of just one new piston will add very little to the total cost.
 
well one piston would not be bad, but we were looking to rering the whole engine. Probably doesn't need it though.
 
Unless you have other problems, a D282 with IH sleeves and pistons would just be getting broken in at 2000 hours. With full chrome ring sets I've seen them take a couple hundred hours just to get the rings fully seated.
