manifold paint

I have my manifold off right now. It's got some rust on it, so I think I ought to shoot it with some paint just to hold it until I can do something more "complete". (like freeing the valve inside and replacing the heat control lever and broken studs).

So for now, I just want to shoot it with some black paint. Can I just do that? Shoot it, and it will be ok for a while? Or do I have to go through the whole process of sand blasting, primer, then paint?

What paint would you recommend?

Thanks!

Mike, It would be best to clean it good. I use wood stove flat black in spray can it holds up OK. Oldiron29

mike, like oldiron said, use bbq grille paint. our local powder coater has been doing that for about the past year, lasts longer than the manifold paint. the paint em and bake in the powder coat oven. if you have a gas grille out doors, (i think thats a standard requirement out there in califory,) bake it about an hour at 300 degrees or so.

Let it sit until you are ready to work on it. You have said you want originality. IH painted it red with the rest of the tractor and let it burn off. That is what I do, I have never seen a painted manifold, or a picture of a painted manifold that looked right to me. Only my opinion. If you do paint it, wait until you can do it right. Cheap paint will be hard to get off of the rough, pitted cast on your mainfold.

I plan on swapping this manifold for a more complete unit. So right now I just want to protect this one.

I used grey exhaust paint that is used for manifolds on cars. Just make sure you get all of the old stuff off because anything under it that will burn will burn off and take off the paint above it. Make sure the paints heat rating is high enough to withstand high temps. Dont use high heat engine paint, make sure it is exhaust paint, the heat rating for exhaust paint is alot higher.

I clean mine up with a 4 12 in grinder and put the stove black to and then throw it on the wood stove for a couple hrs.Let it cool off and buff it up to make it purty. Hoss

Why worry about manifold paint? I don't think the
burnt portions of the manifold can be seen behind
heat shield.

Electrolysis. Lots of info on the net and in the archives. In a couple of days in the tank, all rust will be gone.

If you want it black, try BBQ black spray paint. It will last a little while.

Yup, however, I'm going to hold off on this manifold because if I free up the hot box valve, then I'll have to figure out how to change the selector valve control rod. And that is more work than I want to get into at this point. This manifold works, so I just want to use it until I get the other manifold completely ready. Then I can fix my current one so I can sell it.

Mike, I have never in my life seen a paint that will hold up on a manifold, ever! High temp my butt! I did find one thing that make them look like new and wont burn off because it isn't a paint. You may have to order it from a NAPA store but the stuff is called DGF (dry graphite film spray) Spray it on and give it a light buff with a rag and WOW! even looks like raw cast iron. Bad news is you may have to respray it once a year! Give it a shot and by the way it works on squeaky things around the house too and drawer slides! Come to think of it if you have a buddy who works at a gun shop at the base I think they use it there as well.
