OEM Disc brake service

Hi Guys,
I'm working on a 53SH and need to get the brakes redone. Anybody have an experience with OEM's disc brake service?

Shipping will be expensive. I have done only 2 sets of disk brakes, all I did was sand the surfaces, put in new disks and replace the springs, etc. Both tractors had absolutely no working brakes. Also, do a search in the archives, as this question came up in the last month or so.

Like CNKS, I also did my own on my super M. I had found a manual for disc brakes for the SMTA on ebay and used it as a guide. Best $7 I ever spent on ebay.

I entered every phrase I could think of and see alot of posts saying that OEM will do it but not any responses from anybody actually using them. Also found all the posts on how to do it. My brakes are on a tractor that sat for 15+ years full of mud and debri. The linkage has rusted apart and the surfaces need more than sanding. My research has shown that by the time I get my parts turned locally and buy all the appropriate parts, OEM's disc brake service price + freight sounds cheap. The IH Case dealer is the only machine shop around here that has a clue how to turn these parts and they are ridiculously expensive.

Yes, standard rate of labor is about $75/hour. Seems they could do that in that length of time, though -- perhaps they are overly proud of their machine shop.

If I could get a commitment out of them that it would only take an hour I would have them do it. The IH service writers initial response was to bring the tractor in. I had to explain to him that it was in 100 pieces and even if it was operational how do you propose I move it with no brakes? The coversation deteriorated and ended shortly thereafter. This was the final stop in dragging these parts around to several different machine shops in my area. The sad thing is I have a great relationship with the parts lady. She has been fun to work with. After I calm down and get civil again I may talk to the owner of this dealership.

I had both of the brakes on my 350 diesel rebuilt by OEM. It cost about $25 to ship each way from where I am in western Wisconsin. They did a nice job and they work really well now that I finally have the tractor running. They sandblast and machine the inside of the brake castings and replace all worn components. They do nothing to the outside except replace the rubber boot, but after I thought about it that is what they should do as some people are just having them rebuilt and then putting them back on the tractor. I ended up sandblasting and priming the outside when I got them back before installing them. Roger

It"s really pretty easy to do. Pretty self-explanatory when you take it apart. You won"t need a manual or anything like that. You can order discs, linkages, springs, boots and balls, and be way ahead of the game versus OEM (and I like OEM).

When I bought my super H a couple of years ago, my brakes didn"t work even a little bit. I took everything apart, cleaned up the housings, then used a dremel tool to grind away the years of rust and polish clean. I cleaned up the braking surfaces really well with the dremel as well, then used sandpaper to polish it to a just slightly rough surface, but perfectly cleaned and shiny. Don"t sweat any pitting - it won"t matter that much.

When I reassembled, I used dry graphite powder for the balls and ramps, no grease. New linkages with never-seize on the threads. Oh, and just take a rasp and rough up the new pads just a little. Makes "em a little grabbier. My brakes worked like new right out of the gate. Using them keeps them clean and rust free. If they sit, the discs will glaze up with superficial rust just like your car does overnight, but they clean right up first time you use them.

I highly recommend doing it yourself. I got a lot of satisfaction out of it. It"s pretty easy to see really good results.
