Farmall M - Steering Shaft Seal

It was suggested that while I have the radiator off my Farmall M I should replace the steering shaft seal. My question is, how do I safely remove the old seal and install a new one? Do I also need to replenish the grease in the steering mechanism which I assume is done by removing the round cover plate from the top of the steering fork. How much grease is needed and how full should it be? If unable to find the recommended "corn head" grease here in SC is there an alternative lubricant I should use?

I would drill a tiny hole in the seal and screw in a small tapered screw. Then grab it with some vice grips and it should come out. You can also squirt some PB blaster around the outer edges to help the process along. I'm replacing mine on my MD also. I don't know what the difference between corn head grease and regular grease is, but will try to find some. How's the bearing at the end of the shaft? Mine was toast and will need replacement. BTW, the seal and bearing are readily available from NAPA, just provide them with the original part number.

Bruce, I've never used any "corn heard grease" or even ever seen any as I've never used any. From prior posts here on this site, I believe it is a John Deere product so if you don't mind a little green on your tractor have a neighbor pick you up some as you probably don't want to be seen in one of those "green" places, Hal.

It took 2 tubes on my H using the JD stuff, maybe IH has red corn head grease ; )

Thanks for the clarification but I had thought I had heard the "green" dealers were the source. Glad to know it can be found anywhere and plan on using it whenever I need to get into that area, Hal.
