Genny belt saga continues

Upon suggestion from this thread: http://ytforums.ytmag.com/viewtopic.php?t=548514 I turned the bracket upside down to see how that will affect my genny belt replacement. Here is what I found, please offer suggestions...

The bottom bracket, as you may know, has it's holes off-set. So when I flipped it, it pulled the genny back. That pulled the belt out of alignment, as shown here:

The flipped bracket also raised the genny, which put the belt very, very close to the bottom of the water pump, as seen in these 2 pics:

With the bracket flipped back, how I originally intended, you can see the clearance under the hood. But if I stretch it out to tension the belt, I get awfully close to the side of the hood. It may even hit. Hard to tell without the radiator on.

So, I'm not sure what to do. Buying a new belt may be expensive. I could drill out new holes in the bottom bracket to pull the genny forward to align it with the engine pulley, but I don't know if it will clear that water pump enough. I can only hope that it does.

What do you all think I should do at this point?

Oh, and a question was asked whether my genny pulley is adjustable... yes it is. When I tighten it, the slot for the belt has a larger diameter, tightening the belt.

Mike:
I know you're on a tight budget but I'd go ahead and buy a new belt and do the job right. In the grand scheme of things a gen belt is a cheap item compared to some tractor projects and you will probably never need to ever replace it again.

Looking at one picture it looks like the adjustable pulley can be closed in making the generator adjustment act like you put a shorter belt on it.

From your pictures you clearly have the adjustable sheave pulley, close it up to tighten the belt.

mike, you can tighten that gen pulley so that the belt is riding at the top of pully, it can be flush with top. right now it looks like your riding on the btm. you have all kinds of adjustment here. biggest thing is get that pulley loose and lubed up so it turns freely.another thing is there is no slot in that top brace from factory, its just tightened with the pulley.i would just put everything back the way it should be and tighten with the pulley and your good to go.if then that dont take up all the slack spend $20.00 and get the proper belt from IH .

mike, when i did the 12v conversion on my H carquest set me up with a new belt for 14$ and had a 2yr warranty, bring them that belt and say you want one 1/2 inch shorter and ull bee al set-Pat

three possible problems from the photo's, first the bracket on these wasn't adjustable, it will work just set it so you don't have interferance problems with hood etc., second misalignment of pulleys can be solved unbolting gen. from bracket, move it the direction needed to align pulleys use washers on bolts to space correctly, third use adjustable pulley to tension belt, be sure set screw locks back into one of the slots ,if belt won't tighten when pulley is screwed together you will have to get the correct one.
