I took off my radiator (I had another reason to do so, but thought it would give me easier access to the belts). Now I'm looking at this set up, and thinking the only way to get at the genny belt is to remove the fan and take off the fan belt. How in the heck do people do it without removing the radiator??

Anyway, two questions:

1) I've never removed the fan before. Is it just those two bolts on the front? What is that spring-held contraption?

2) Once the fan is off, how do I loosen the fan belt to remove it? And more importantly: CAN I SCREW ANYTHING UP LIKE ENGINE TIMING?

You should be able to loosen the fan belt, sorry Im not certain how in the case of an H, but than you just slip the fan belt off the bottom pulley on the crankshaft. After which you remove the generator belt by slipping it under the loose fan belt, than just slip it over one fan blade at a time and its off. That way you dont have to remove the fan/hub assembly at all.

Hope this helps you some.

To tell the truth in theory it is easy but that is if all works right. You need to loosen the water pump adjustable pulley, remove the water pump belt then replace the genny belt. It is in the manual LOL

Crap, I get so far ahead of myself, I sometimes forget to check the manual. I'll read it tonight.

After you get the fan belt loosened, feed the gen. belt into the fan pulley & roll the engine & fan over so that the belt comes out on the other side of the fan pulley. This method is a little hard on the gen belt, but saves taking the fan belt completely off. Our gen belts are still going after more than 15 years using this method. I definitely wouldn't take the fan/ water pump off.

While you have it this far apart, you should replace the short hose between the water pump and the thermostat.

After you get the fan belt loosened...
That's where I'm stuck. What do I do to loosen that belt so I can move it off the pulley?

Old, I read the manual and it doesn't help me with that question. It just says "once you have yada yada removed..."
