2424 - what is a front mounted hydraulic pump?

Lousy weather here in NY state today, so I decided to change the tranny fluid in my 2424.

My manual says capacity is 5 gallons, EXCEPT for tractors with front mounted hydraulic pump or draft control. 14 gals with front mounted pump, and 17 with front mounted pump and draft control.

The pump on my tractor is just ahead of the oil filter housing. I assumed front mounted pump meant a pump running off the shaft through the grille. But I got about 12 gallons out - that was a big surprise. So I guess this means that I have a front mounted pump?

I do have draft control - so looks like I need about 12 more gallons of fluid?

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks Jeff. I put back in just 5 gallons and will see how it works. I'm surprised that 12 gallons came out if the capacity is only 5 gallons.

I"d want to know the reason for that before I started the machine up again. Was it full of water or fuel?

Without the front mounted pump the transmission oil and hydraulic oil should have separate reservoirs.

When the front mounted pump is installed the bottom cover on the hydraulic reservoir is replaced with one that has a standpipe drain. Oil for the front pump is drawn from the transmission through the hydraulic reservoir and then returned to the top of the hydraulic reservoir. Oil for the camshaft gear driven pump is drawn out of the bottom of the hydraulic reservoir only, not from the transmission.

John - I think I must have put the extra fluid in it. I remember years ago putting more in the tranny - can't remember now why I thought more oil needed to be added. What came out was all fluid, no water or fuel, and a really ugly brown.

It seems to run fine with the 5 gallons in it. Took it for a spin up the hill and it seemed OK.

From what Owen says about the front mounted pump, I clearly do not have one of those. No way I have that much plumbing around the seat. so 5 gallons should be the correct capacity.

Wonder where all that fluid has been hanging out the past 20 years?

Thanks to everyone for the information.

Tim

There is plenty of room in the transmission for that much extra oil. With the front mounted pump there is even more in there. To check the oil with the front mounted pump you measure down from the fill hole rather than use the level check plug on the side of the transmission case.
