Farmall 340 Hydraulic Leak

The picture is of the hydraulic valve bank on a 1960 Farmalll 340. The picture was taken from the left side of the tractor and shows the hydraulic valves that are below the steering column. The silver colored round plug(?)leaks. (The hex head plug is fine) I think the valve is the flow control valve but I'm not sure. I can see a spring retaining clip in a recessed grove above the plug. I figure that needs to come out first. But I'm not sure how the plug comes out since it has a round head. Could it be that the last owner rounded the plug head? Or does it come out from the inside somehow?

I have a 340U. I believe what you're looking at is the control/safety relief valve (on my pic it's the valve on the far left) and the component in the top that is leaking is the power steering priority control. You can release the mechanism via a snap ring. The top disc below the snap ring has an O ring groove and O ring that apparently is leaking. There's one on the bottom of the valve as well. You might wish to disasemble the entire valve while you're at it, as there is a screen and orifice in there that often get clogged. Clean it up and replace all of the O rings would be my recommendation if it's never been done before.

To answer your question more accurately, you push in on the top of the disc, remove the snap ring, and the entire mechanism should spring out.

I sure do appreciate the help. I thought the disc was threaded and would not have ever thought to push down on it to help release the snap ring! You saved me a big headache.

If you decide to remove the valve stack and rebuild it, be very careful, as it weighs about a bazillion pounds. (Actually, it's about 80, but might as well be a bazillion when you have to reach over and through a loader frame to remove/install it  )

You're sure right there! Definitely a two person job, or use a engine crane.

If you are going to rebuild the valves, I'd try to find a copy of IH Blue Ribbon Manual GSS-1278 (Valves and Systems). You see them on eBay once in awhile, but I got my used copy from an IH dealer in PA (Hoober).

Thanks again! I got the leak fixed today. Just needed a new o ring in the retainer(plug). Simple fix once you know how it comes apart. But I never would have figured it out on my own.
