Super MTA Hydro 3pt not working.

I have a 1954 Super MTA that has power steering and a 3 pt lift that is hooked to one of the Hydro remotes. MY problem is that None of the Hydrualics work. The lift will not come up and the power steering does not work. I can not feel any fluid moving in any of the hoses. I can see the pump on the side of the tractor but how do I tell what is wrong with it??? Thanks in advance for your help.

My first question is whether the hydraulic failure occurred suddenly or gradually.

Gradually would indicate bad bearings in the pump leading to excessive clearances.

Sudden failure would point to the priority valve having a short circuit to the reservoir. If there is a relief valve in the priority valve that is allowed to remain unseated, that needs to be looked at.

Wardner,
The failure was gradual... first it seemed like there was little presure at times then it just quit working.. Could you explain how to replace these bearings and is it difficult?

Thanks

If the bearings are shot, the steel gear rotors will hit the aluminum housing and the pump is history. The only fix is a good replacement pump.

If you think that the pump is the problem, you will have to pressure test it. And flow test it. I would start by disconnecting the pressure line from the priority valve, attaching a high pressure gauge and valve, and a return line from there to the filler hole of the SMTA reservoir. Start the tractor with the valve open and slowly close the valve. Watch the gauge. I think the SMTA pumps are capable of 1200 PSI. Don't totally dead-head the flow if you get that kind of pressure.

If that checks out, the problem will likely be a relief valve in the priority valve. There should be a plug that retains a spring loaded ball. The ball or seat may have a gouge carved into it. Or maybe the spring has collapsed.

I have never heard of anyone doing that, at least on this site. In fact, I don't think the pumps are prone to failure but somebody may disagree. I am of the opinion that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Have you checked the fluid level. Also leaks in the system will cause this also. I have the same set up and had a leak that was worse than I thought. Just an idea.
