I"ve got a 1953 farmall cub. I"m trying to get it started It will run as long as you hold the choke rod out when you release the rod it dies. Can anybody offer a solution to this problem?

Fuel starvation either from a plugged/restricted fuel line, or the float is stuck shut. I had the same problem, and it was the float......

sonds like your carburator might have sum trash in it. take it off take it part an clean it maybe evn put a kit in it.

Not a lot of information but here is what I would do... Look in your gas tank and see if there is any crud floating around in it. With clean gas you need a clear fuel line to the carb. Check the screens...haven't done my cub yet but there will be one at the top of sediment bowl and probably at the elbow going into carb for sure. Clean those and check fuel flow at carb. If it is still a problem you may need to clean and possibly put a kit in the carb. How long ago was it done? How long has it been sitting? If it sat a while you may have some blocked passages in the carb. Just been down that road on the old Ford too!

The other guys have talked about not enough fuel, and that's a very good possibility, so check out what they suggest in that regard first.

The flip side is too much air. Is the carb tight to the manifold and is the manifold tight to the motor. If there's a leak anyplace there, you'll have too much fuel even if the carb and fuel flow are in good order.

Unhook the gas line at the carburetor and see if there's a good flow of gas. Not just a trickle.
Catch the gas in a clean container. If old gas has been left in over a period of time your carburetor may be gummed up and needs to be soaked in carb cleaner. Hal

T.G. ; I've got a Cub and all the suggestions are good, but before you try to rebuild the carb, on the side of the carb is a brass hex nut that is actually hollow tube that goes through the carb and feeds off the float. Make sure it is "clean" and then look on the end of the tube and their is a tiny orifice that if it is not clean, the tractor will not run !! Take a very small needle (don't tell your wife !) and clean that orifice carefully put it together and I bet she'll run !!
Best of luck, Jim B. in Oregon

Hi had fuel probs on and off with mine. every time I run out of gas it makes a mess in the carb. so I got the bright idea of adding a fuel filter. I had more fuel problems for a whole summer. then one day I was looking at filters for my riding mower. they had filters for riders with or without a fuel pump. I bought one for a rider with an 18 hp and no pump. tractor runs great and I don't get the prob if I run it out of gas.
