Early 40's H

I have an early 40's model H. I need to change the rearend/tranny oil but the farm store says it takes 10-20w in the winter and 30w for the summer. That doesn't sound quite right to me I've always used something like 90w for rearends. Is it different for the old farmalls? Does it take a much lighter oil? And what is the difference between non-detergent and detergent?

Nope!! The guy at the farm store does not know what he is talking about. The Farmall H uses 90 weight oil. 80w-90 will work also.

detergemnt oils contain 'clearners' with them they break down sludge and despoits in the engine. when they do it goes in suspension and is then caught by the filter. however after years of use and most often lack of oil changes this sludge really builds up. if you put detergent oil in there it may losen up the sludge and block an oil passage. if you drop the oil pan and clean it out real well then it will be ok to use detergent oils until then i use non detergent. at least thats the way i do it.

It is almost assured that the engine has had detergent oil in it. detergent oils came out in the late 40's (early 50's?).
Just like the switch from distillate to gasoline as the fuel of choice, detergent oils were much better and the farmer could keep his machine in better shape with the use of detergent oils..

It's pretty obvious that the guy at the farm store MISUNDERSTOOD you and thought you were talking about the ENGINE oil.

SAE30, or any good modern 10W engine oil goes in the engine.

SAE90 or any good modern gear lube goes in the transmission.

Hytran or "Hytran equivalent" fluid goes in the belly pump.
