Steering problems

I have a 1952 300 untility IH tractor. Steering keeps breaking at the base of the steering column inside the steering box where a pin rides up and down on a heilical gear. Is that pin suppose to be a floating or stationary pin? Or is there any suggestions or modifications you've done to correct this problem? Short of just making it hydraulic instead of machanical.

That pin is suppose to ride up and down the screw gear. You don't want to get it too tight or it will bind up. The way to fix your steering if the pin is worn it to have it welded up and ground to shape.

I thought it was a 1952 by the hand stamp of 1152 so was think Nov. 1952.

The other number is 19632SJ and I thought this was the serial number.

But now that you've said that I'm wondering if it could possible be a 1963, I just don't know.
