Farmall A Powersteering

I've been all through the archives and haven"t had any luck. I have a 1940 A that I rebuilt that is currently waiting for paint. I was wondering if anyone ever thought of, attempted, or actually succeeded at rigging a powersteering set up on an A or super A. This tractor is just a grasscutter for a 5 acre yard and will plow the driveway in the winter, nothing heavier than that. Bigger chores will go to the bigger tractors. I know the A's steer easy with just the factory "armstrong" setup, but my wife will be the primary operator, as she enjoys mowing grass. I want to make it as comfortable as possible, plus we do have a few trees and I really don"t want to find the front end buried into one of them. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank- you

I don't recall how the steering shaft lies in an A, but if it has a straight section at least 16-18" long where a bracket to hold a Char-Lynn torque motor can be built, I don't know why not. I would go with an automotive belt driven pump, like a Saginaw (GM) with a reservoir on it, and hook it up... two hoses. Char-Lynn (Eaton) is a current product line and should be available somewhere.
My 240U has it mounted in a straight section along the left side of the motor, but it would be the right side on the A.

oh yea theres a photo floating around this site some where it was a super a with a charlyn unit mounted just below the steering rod support

It would be easy on an A. Get the Char-Lynn and place near the steering sector add a power steering pump under the gen and a longer belt and it would be a neat set-up.

I saw one many years ago in Dunstable, MA. The torque generator (must have been Charlynn) was mounted parallel to the steering shaft down near the bolster. Input and output were chain driven. I don't think the IH steering shaft was cut. Don't know how well it worked. I wouldn't be inclined to reproduce that setup to find out.

Thanks for all the replies. Gene I was kinda leaning towards the setup your talking about. Was thinking I could mount a Char-lynn unit low on the steering shaft with a GM type pump. Like you said, just a longer belt, plus it would keep my hoses short. I'll give it a shot and post a pic.

It could be a neat set=up with hoses bieng short and so forth been going to do that someday just havent got around yet. A SC or C would also make a neat set-up. I know of a couple that did it for cultivating small crops ect. The one lady is big time in veggies does lots and wanted easier steeringa. Why not
