IH 544D - Advice / Comments

Looked at a 544 diesel. Seems in really good shape. Couldn't find anything that didn't work. Said he would guarantee it!? Guys asking $3k which seems reasonable. Any quirky charateristics or known flaws with this tractor? Would it make a good loader tractor and what would be good loader?

Well make sure that the TA is working unless its a hydro in that case make sure it is working properly because both of those things are really expesive to repair. As far as a loader goes if you want to stay with IH a 2001 loader is the one they usually use i think. But there are a number of loaders availible for that tractor .God luck Erik..

They are a good little tractor. Far as TA, the parts cost the same for pretty much all of them from a 300 to a 560 or 656, however, the labor on the 656 or 544 is a lot more. I used to hang up the entire fuel tank, steering and hydraulic column along with seat on 300 to 560 right on a sling attatched to the front splitting stand. Then I back the rear section with TA housing out fron under . On the 656 you have to take off a jillion hydraulic lines etc and lift it all off seperately. Maybe it was just me but it took me much longer to do a ta job on one of them therefore total bill climbed. At these $70 per hour shop rates they charge now days it goes through the roof.
