Super H alternator

I just bought a 54 super H, it has an alternator on it,but the hood won't latch as the alternator is to large. The alternator is a 10SI.I see on e-bay where the are selling alternator kits for the H, the diameter is 4 inches, and the fit up under the hood. I don't think I want to spend $190 on one. Does anybody have a number of an alternator, or cross reference to one that will fit? Thank's for any help. PS I have allready been to 4 junk yards with no luck.

I have never had any problem mounting a 10SI under the hood of the M or H. You just need to make the mount so it drops it down a little and holds it close to the engine then have a short belt

link shows picture of how i do them. use an idlerpulley (get mine at lawnmower shop), invert bracket and that is it. idler lets you adjust belt and install/remove very easy. posted this pictures several years ago. this one was copied and posted by little john from il.

Don, I converted my 1951 H to 12 volt using a Hitachi #14231 12 volt alternator. It is about an inch less in diameter then a Delco 10SI. The original application for the Hitachi alternator was on 1978 - 1980 Nissan model 620 and 720 pickup trucks I was told. There was no problem obtaining a rebuilt one from the national known auto parts stores for about $50 plus a core charge. When I converted my tractor I documented the entire process and have it stored on my PC and would be happy to share with you if you send me an email through the forum. Hope this helps as the Hitachi makes a very neat installation on a H or Super H, without the need to fabricate a lot of additional hardware and modify the belt routing, Hal.

Just turn the bracket over and line up the pulleys.
On mine the OE belt worked and it needed NO top brace because the alternator was against the rocket arm cover and the hood touches it also. A double pulley helps line up the belt

Don, I haven't forgotten you. My PC email is messed up from a Microsoft Automatic Update and will be taking it in to the PC Tech in town tomorrow morning. Soon as I get it back and if you have an email in my incoming mail I will forward the file to you. Until then I can't access Outlook where my email and files resides. Hal
