6 Volt generator VR

Thanks to all who have helped me lately.I have a 6V DR gen & VR from a 1948 CHevy on my W9. I got the gen working ,only with the F grounded. I have assured that the wires from G to VR are ok and that both the G & VR case are grounded. I can get a new VR for $50.00. I made up my mind before I spent that kind of money I would convert to 12V. MY question now is there any way I could fix or get my VR to work. WHen I grd the F the contact on the F terninal of the VR closes and she charges ok. I assume that the contact on the A terminal must be closed and that the CO terminal is closed allowing the current to flow back to the battery. ANy help would be appricated. Thank you.

First off, to avoid unnecessary SMOKE, disconnect the battery before "overhauling" the voltage regulator!)

The contact that is normally OPEN is the cutout relay that disconnects the generator from the battery any time it's NOT charging.

The 2 contacts that are normally closed are in the "F" circuit... one is the current regulator and one is the voltage regulator. Those normally-closed contacts complete the FIELD circuit so the generator can begin charging. Your trouble lies with them or the circuit associated with them. Try burnishing the normally-closed contacts by repeatedly drawing a clean white piece of cardstock through them, followed by a spray of electrical contact cleaner with them propped open. Allow time for the contact cleaner to completely evaporate, then pull out whatever you were propping them open with and try the system.

(Some regulators have the voltage and current-regulating functions combined in ONE unit/set of contacts.)

Thanks Bob, I tried that and it did not make any difference. The contact at the F termn is closed and the contact at the A termn is closed and the B termn is open. WHen I grd the Field the contact on the F terminal opens (or makes contact with the other side) Then she charges. I guess I will have to get a 1 wire alt and switch her over to 12V. What kind of resistor do I have to have for the primary ign wire?
Thanks
