I read a post sometime ago about someone needing a big tractor to bale with. I am ready to trade balers and went to 2 different dealers and the difference from my old heston 5500 to todays balers and the price. I paied 8500.00 for my baler new. They want over 30,000.00 for a new one today. They told me my old 856 would not handle it and I needed a 125 horse atleast for a baler to make 5X6 bales or would have to drop down to a 5X5 baler. Think I'll stick with my old baler

They make 5x6 balers that your 856 will handle. I pulled a vermeer baler that made a 5x6 bale for years with a 856 and 806. Most balers today require more hp with all the extra stuff on them and the amount you can do in a day and they need to be cab tractors for the monitors to stay dry and clean. AGCO and JD still make balers that a 100 hp tractor can still handle.

I have neighbors that run Deere 535,566, 567, 568 5X6 balers with Deere 6400 4 bangers up and down our hills no problem. Unless your 856 it totally wore out it will handle a Deere 5X6 baler no problem. I think they just want to sell you a tractor too.

I bale with a Farmall 504 (48 pto new) pulling a Vermeer 504C (5x4 and old) for 3 cuts of 40 acres anually. Mostly flat, some hills and heavy hay. My grandfather, father, and myself have been baling with this combo since the early 80's.

Y'all are talking about OLD, simple balers. When you get into these new, heavy, complicated balers that can handle twice as much material, it takes more power.

The dealer that told you that is full of it. I have a JD 566 5x6 round baler. Its a 2000 model so its pretty knew. they told me when i bought it that it would take a min of a 85-90 hp tractor to run it, but if your pullin alot of hills you may want to go with something with a 6 cylinder. closer to a 100 hp. I have a 6105 white and an 1850 oliver. Both tractors handle it just fine. I bought my baler used and gave less than half of what a new one cost! For years we ran an old case baler and than an owtanna roller baler. I know that it cost alittle more money but it will bale anything i put infront of it!
