IH 656 Hydro problem

My dad has an IH 656 Hydro tractor that he is working on but for some reason he can't get it to go forward. It will go into reverse fine but is touchy about forward. Sometimes it will go and then just quit. I know little about tractors and he knows little about computers so ask any questions needed and I'll get the info.

Very possible that the snap ring came off the end of the shuttle valve. Typical symptoms are having to go in reverse before the tractor will move forward after using the Foot-N-Inch pedal.

I have a Hydro 70 that was doing the same thing. The cause was the fiberglass housing which the speed ratio lever goes through was loose and not holding the speed ratio lever to the right far enough. Repositioned the housing and tightened the bolts... problem solved! I'm not sure if the 656 Hydro uses the same system, but it sounds like the same symptom.

I would agree it could well be the SR lever is not pulling directional control valve far enough when moving to fwd side. Have seen this many times on the 656 and also a 70. Loose quadrant like previous poster said or little adjustment needed. Of course it could be the snap ring on shuttle valve or end cap coming loose on end of shuttle valve (among a few other things) You said he has been working on tractor, was this to solve this problem or was he doing some other work. Reason I ask is if you reverse the two lines from center section to control valve all kind of crazy things can happen. Not that I ever did it but they showed us that down in Hickory Hill training center one time.
