M power steering?

What kind of power steering options are there for an M? I found one of those pumps that go on the steering shaft in front of the light stand and has two hoses. Are these any good and if so, how is it installed on my M which has a live pump?
Thanks.

its prolly a char-lynn torque generator. to hook it up to the live pump, you need to plum in a hydraulic priority valve, steiners and oem tractor parts sell them. i have the char-lynn manuals on my computer, if you want a copy, shoot me an email and i will send them to you.it has the parts lists and install and operation instructions.

Sounds like you've got a Behlen PS torque generator. It mounts above the gas tank just ahead of the light bar and is fairly large.

The Charlynn is considerably more compact. It mounts under the hood in front of the gage bracket.

Both types work well. However I prefer the Charlynn as it makes for a neater looking installation (can't been seen with the hood on).

Your live pump will easily run either type of PS. You will however need to add a priority valve between the pump output and the PS inlet so the steering doesn't quit when you use the hydraulics.

That's a Behlen. There are two types. Long shaft and short shaft. The long shaft is what you see in the picture. It is after-market. The short shaft was used on the 400-450 and is OEM. It would have to go under the hood and probably won't fit.

Long shaft will have threads for the steering wheel nut.

Docs: Basically, there are two options; Charlynn and Behlen. My tractor came with a Behlen and I have no complaints, but would have preferred a Charlynn due to the compactness and concealment.
There are a couple of good things about a Behlen, however. If you are working on your engine, it is not nearly as apt to get in your way. A second benefit is that the Behlen unit is not going to rub a hole through your hood from underneath as Charlynn units sometimes have done over time.
Either way, I believe you will be pleased that you have PS on your M.

When Dad bought his second JD 60 he had a Char-Lynn torquemotor and Saginaw (GM) pump installed. This clamped to the steering pedestal in front of the steering wheel and sure made a good hand warmer when picking corn in zero weather... oh, and it worked very good for steering too :) . Neighbor with a factory PS 60 said it felt better than his.
later when dad sold it to his brother, the pump went out and they hooked it up to the internal hydraulic pump. Dad had that choice, but the 50-60-70 series had a lever to disengage the hydraulic pump if you didn't need it and he chose to go with the belt driven set-up... I would do the same.
My 240U has a Char-Lynn and uses the flow divider, and when idled down and the priority flow goes to the steering, there is nothing left for the 3 point. I have a crankshaft driven pump for the Wagner loader with more flow than it needs, and have thought about tying the flow divider and return into the loader for the steering, but it would not be as clean of a set-up. Now it almost looks factory.

here is the charlynn set up on an m, the torque genny is mounted up by the gauges, and the belt driven pump is to the top right.

glennster, how well does that pump keep up?

My MD has the same gerotor and it takes a fair bit of pump to keep it going well. We put on a small car pump but it doesn't turn fast enough without a multiplier pulley and that overloads the little belt. Being a diesel means the Saginaw may not have space to fit, but I need to try it I think.
