starter help

now that my 300 is fixed, the starter died. Maybe not- it spins but does not engage the flywheel. Local napa cannot order anything. Tractor has been converted to 12 volt. It appears as though the 6 volt starter just had a 12 volt solenoid added. can I do that to another 6 volt starter or did that cause the problem to begin with? Any help is appreciated- hate to have to get out the hand crank!

If the starter spins, but does not engage the flywheel, most likely you are in need of a new starter drive. About $33

i have an m that does that. like rusty said, prolly needs a drive. i wind up pulling the starter off, spinning the drive by hand, spray a little wd 40 on it and put it back in. it will work fine until you are in a hurry to use the tractor, then the starter sticks.

Thats typical......If you convert to 12 volts and keep the 6 votl starter they work okay butttttttttett can be tough on starter drives due to that high initial kick in torque. In such cases I recommend the use of a lighter duty 12 volt battery, maybe 400 to 500 CCA NOTTTTTT any big honkin 1000 CCA which worsens the situation. I never had any go bad when I used 12 volts on them but its NOT rocket science to see how its harder on starter drives.

The options are use 12 and a light duty battery,,,,,have a shop convert it to 12,,,,,,,,get a new or used 12 that still fits n works,,,,,,do nothing but fix the drive and cross your fingers, it may last a longggggggggg time

Just replace it with a clutch type drive, looks different, works for (nearly) ever. 6 or 12v no issue. JimN

thanks.. will check out my options for this neck of the woods (actually prairie). BTW thanks for all the kind words regarding my photo post earlier! John

don,t weary about your tractor being changed to 12 volts ,best thing that could be done to assure reliable starting as long as charging circuit is wired right,6 volt starters will work, and 6 volt ignition coils also if used with proper ballast resistor, only good thing about 6 volt system was it kept you from using a hand crank part of the time
