Want a slightly used voltage regulator? SA charging Cont

Well I went back after it this afternoon, took the generator to a buddy of mine and he said nothing wrong with it. Went to Case and pd $40 for a new VR, came home, hooked it up, flashed the gen and Bingo, it charges.

Man what a run around, I now have the complete wiring schematic for a SA memorized, at least for a day or 2 until it my tired mind forgets it.

Just for kicks I was watching th batt volts while it was running in all kinds of configs.

Full throttle

No lights, it runs the batt up to around 7.5vdc
Dim lights up to around 7.3
Bright lights, around 7

At idle it a whole different story

No lights 7 vdc
Dim lights 6.5 and dropping
Bright lights 6.2 and dropping.

One thing when I was digging a little deeper, the third brush is not moveable in this genny and it is closer than the 3.2 commutator spaces reccomended in the book to the fixed brush.

Might this be a potential isssue in the future if the genny's putting out too much? And how much is too much at the gennys arm terminal?

Thanks for all your expertise guys, it's nice to have people to share the pain with! All I wanted to do was spread some manure, jezzzzz, sometimes!

The third brush spacing will not be a problem with a functioning voltage regulator. Later generators eliminated the third brush and just drew the field coil current from the same brush as the A terminal. The VR will keep the generator from overcharging.

Thanks for the replies.

Ya know, I purchased that old VR at TSC, hooked it up, it worked, parked the machine, came back to it a month or so later, it worked, parked it again, came back to it and it wouldn't work, banged on the cover and it would work intermittently.

I just figured something else was going bad and just couldn't admit to myself that something that was basically brand new, never been crosswired, zapped, or even used more than a few hours and worked for a while would give trouble.

Wouldn't you know that I went to start up a ford 5000 today with a TSC 950 CCA Traveler battery in it and the thing was flat dead and the batt cable stays off the battery when its just sitting there, dont need any barn fires.

Guess I'm done with TSC for a while unless its some hitch pins or clips or something. Stinking imported cheap junk.

After all this, it's got me wondering if there still isn't a problem somewhere and this new one will poop out after a while, time will tell I guess.

I'm good at allot of things but destruction is my specialty.

By the way, thats whats left of rain water under the tractor, not one leak on this one.

I wouldnt worry about it, Ive seen different Delco genny specs where the max third brush ranged al the way from 2.5 (OR LESS) to to 3.5 spaces.. Besides a major purpose of the VR is to regulate and limit the gennys output so it should do its job IFFFFFFF its the right one for your particular genny

And how much is too much at the gennys arm terminal?

The open unloaded output (NOT coupled to a battery load) on a gennys armature dont tell you all that much, it increases if the genny spins faster and/or you pump more current through its field windings. Its to what voltage it can maintain and raise that of a battery when coupled up to it THAT REALLY MATTERS.

Scott, glad to hear your SA is back in fine shape. I've got the same problem with a '53 Super C...can't bring myself to spend the $$ for a new VR. I can charge the battery and run it for 2 weeks by crank starting it without recharging...I know, I need to get my act together...I'm glad that Case still has them, I bought a TSC ampmeter for the 53 and it lasted about 2 weeks before it crapped out....I put the original back in and it still works...live and learn. It seems that most of these Voltage Regulators are made in China and it is not uncommon for them NOT to work right out of the box! Napa sells the USA made 6 volt VR BTW.
