I am looking to buy a 706 diesel i hear there are two diffrent motors witch one is better and how do you tell the diffrence? also what would be a good price for one that runs good and has new tires

The early 706D came with an American made engine with 282 CID. It uses glow plugs to aid in starting. The later ones came with a German made engine with 310 CID. It is a direct injection engine and uses the shut off cable to also put the pump in the excess fuel position to aid in starting. If you are not familiar with the engines the easiest way to tell them apart is the D282 uses glow plugs so there will be a switch and glow plug meter under the steering wheel.

On the 310 diesel the oil filter lays horizontal on the right front of the engine just above the frame rail. On the 282 it is vertical towards the righthand back of the engine

I sold my 706 about five years ago, got $6,200.00 out of it. It had a D282 with a M&W turbo set up on it. It had 50% rubber, good paint and everything worked on it. It was a glow plug engine and you had to have everything right on it for it to start easy but I always had good luck out of it. Don't know anything about the 310 motor. They used them one year in the 706, (1967) and then went to the 756 with the 310. Only thing I have heard the 310, cost more to rebuild.

I bought a 706 with the 282 (needs a little work) for $2900 at auction. Apparently the 282 has a reputation for head/head gasket failure so be sure to look for antifreeze leaks and/or oil mixing.
Good luck.
