grinding in differential on H

My H has grinding in the differential. At first it was only when turning. This happened on two turns. A few minutes later it did it again on the straight. I shut it down in the field where it was so as not to cause further damage. It has the right amount of oil. This was after doing several hours of brush hogging.

Any educated guesses as to what it is and what kind of repair im looking at?

sounds like the heifer shaft jumped the bull gear!actually sounds like one axle brg. gave out and the bull gear is rubbing on the lower housing.most likely the second choice.

forgot to say that would involve removing trans. cover. draining oil, removing axle, possible taking to machine shop and installing new brgs.washing out all filings from case.check to see if wheel is leaning in at top or jack up at drawbar.

Drain the oil, remove the PTO and inspect with a good flash light. Jack up each side looking for the slack between bull gears and housing as you jack and any chipped or broken teeth. Could be any number of bearings. Once identified, decide how dedicated you are to the fix.

What happens when you apply each brake hard? If you have a broken axle bearing you will get some major jerking.

Might have sheered the housing where the bearings sit on the ends of the differential. The pinion shafts will hold it all together, the broken part stays with the bearing, but will rotate and eventually grind itself out and really do damage. Pull starting, locking up the brakes at high speeds will snap em right off! ChadS
