H with m&w overdrive, needs new cable

I have an H Farmall with a M & W overdrive, the outside of the cable that operates the overdrive is in bad condition. I believe it's an old school choke cable. My question is, what's the best way of replacing that? Going to have to get inside the transmission to remove the cable. Do that from the top, remove the belt pulley assembly? Any way of doing it from below? Any thoughts would be helpful. I could post pics on this topic at some point. Just thought I would ask before doing so. :wink:

pretty sure the deck needs to come off to replace the cable, prolly the bely pulley asem too, the cable goes thru the belt pulley housing if i remember. for a replacement cable, go to a truck supply company, they can match it up with a pto cable from a tow truck. i"d rather put a heavier cable in instead of a choke cable. do it once and be done for a long time.

You might be able to replace the cable through the belt pully opening. Drain the tranny because the cable connects in the very bottom. The cable enters the tranny through a dowell pin on the side of the housing. The dowell pin is drilled and has a jam nut with a o-ring around the cable.The above post is correct about needing a heavier cable than a regular choke cable. kfox

Sorry to disagree with the other poster. If you remove the belt pulley gear box you should be able to remove the inside wire of shift cable from anchor at shift lever. To finish removing cable go up from the bottom of clutch housing, where the cable passes through the bolt unscrew the smaller hex nut. It has threads on the inside also to fit cable, Not all cables you find will fit the nut. With cable retaining nut unscrewed and then removed from cable along with the anchor at shift lever the cable will pull out of the hole in clutch housing. If cable is bad cut it then remove nut.
