I have a lady friend with an A that she uses for plowing snow. Anyway there seems to be a governor problem. It won't come back to idle. The throttle lever only speeds up the engine, it won't slow it down. You need to go to the throttle linkage on the left of the engine and move the linkage to slow the engine. In the ITT manual there is a cutaway of the governor, showing a spring that looks like if it wasn't hooked up or was broken would cause this problem. Any thoughts, I haven't messed with Farmall governors. Can you take the governor off without taking off the radiator? Any thoughts or help here would help me to help this woman. Thanks, Tom

Good chance that spring is your problem.

It's awkward, but the governor can be gottenoff without removing anything, but it's often easier if you can get at least the fan shroud off.

Just as a tip, set your motor up to top dead center on compression on #1 before you pull the governot. It will help with lining the gear back up and keep your ignition in time when you go to put things back together.

Another is to have a tray or something under the governor when you first rempve the cover. The center shaft spring and pin have a habit of going astray, and we won't even talk about the ball bearings in the thrust bearing. Do not ask how I learned these things.

Thanks Scotty. It looked like the cowling around the radiator and fan shroud at least would have to come off. And the tips about things falling out are welcome, I wouldn't have thought of that.

The governor spring pulls the throttle open. The governor weights slow down or shut the throttle plate. The spring could be broken & jamming the gov. so it can't shut the throttle. My guess is that you have rust or seized needle bearings on the throttle control shaft, or pins that carry the gov. weights are worn through/ broken. This will become apparent after you take the gov. off.
Make sure before removing the gov. that there is no binding in the gov. to throttle shaft linkages.
