How do this sound: Water jacket

My water jacket has a slight slow leak, and it starting to rust, as seen below. So, I need to fix it. I don't remember exactly what I did when I initially installed it, so I can't say if I applied enough sealer or not. My plan: Drain the water, get a new gasket, reapply sealer to both sides, and tighten it down. Maybe I should spray some primer on the jacket as well.

Sound about right?

I'd take it apart to clean it up good. Get a new gasket and put some silicone or permatex to seal it. Can't hurt it by having too much. I had problems with mine at one time leaking around the bolts so I used a thread sealant on them as I but it back together. Make sure you clean ALL of the old gasket off and have an extremely clean surface when you put it all back together.

And yes...get some primer and at least a spray can of 2150 to get that new plate painted before it's rusted through.

As Brownie, I want to know if it is in the metal, or at the gasket/bolts. Either way the plate needs to be cleaned primered and painted. If the leak is in a surface, it needs to be brazed to cover the rust pits (inside is least visible). Your coolant should prevent rust, so make sure it has Coolant mix (50/50 with clean water). Do not leave plain water in it, you will have rusting on internal parts and high regrets. Jim.

The only primer that is absolutely water proof is epoxy, the spray gun, not can, type. All others must be topcoated.

Mike, let me dig around out in the shop. I might find a used cover that I could make you a deal on. I'd much rather see you fix it just once and be done with it.

Rusty, don't bother. That was a brand new cover 2 years ago when I put it on. I'm sure it will clean up fine, it just had some leakage from the bottom. I'm not sure why it got rust on the surface there, but no matter. I'll clean it up, throw some primer on it, and re-seal the whole deal.

I am just being a busy-body here but I don't think
lock washers are stock. If I recall correctly,
there should only be a plain washer and it is
smaller in thickness and cross section. That might
be part of your problem.

As for paint, I don't think it will make much
difference. If it were hot dipped galvanized, you
might have something that will extend the life of
that cover. IH calls it a header.

Just looked in the parts guide and it didn't show the water jacket cover at all.

I just replaced what came off it when I took them off, so lock washers could very much be wrong.

Does anyone have a different parts manual that shows the water jacket bolts and washers? Can you confirm flat washers? If so, I'll switch. If not... maybe I'll switch anyway.

Mike, on the CaseIH parts website Under Farmall H section 012 Engine figure 9 is what you are looking for. It is easy to over tighten the the metal channel and distort it to make it leak ; )

I should also add that those lock washers appear
to be oversized. I think the bolts are 5/16" and
you may have 3/8" lock washers.

If it were my tractor, I would get the smallest
copper flat washer that fits the bolt. Find an
old store that still has Dorman automotive small
parts cabinets. What you need will be in one of
those orange cabinets. If that is not possible, go
to a diesel injector shop. For that matter, hit
your buddies up at the Naval aircraft maintenance
shop. Naw, it shouldn't affect my taxes too much.

Well there it is. I saw "oil", so skipped it. Thanks Randy!

And Wardner, it is just a flat washer. I'll get some correctly sized ones. Don't think I will have any luck getting copper ones.

So, you can make them "too" tight? I'll have to check my service manual to see if there is a torque value. Not that I have a torque wrench... but it will be good to know anyway.

Mike, you are NOT to blame for that cover having no primer. The primer SHOULD have already been on it when you got it. The water header covers that I sell are already primed when I get them.
