Sealing Farmall 504 oil filter housing gasket

I have just had my Farmall 504 gasser overhauled. The good news is the oil pressure is 50 psi. The bad news is the gasket that seals the oil filter housing blows out easily and throws oil all over. so far I have used the gaskets that came with the NAPA 1172 filter which is what they say is for the 504. Is there a trick to make this gasket seal? Is the gasket the IH dealer will sell me any different and better? Has anyone made their own gasket in this application? Thanks in advance.

I assume that you are referring to the gasket between the filter canister and the block. If that seal ring type gasket is the one that is blowing out, you still have an old gasket stuck in the block. Most likely it is so hard you will have to chisel it out. The new gasket should fit down inn the groove, not stick up above the casting surface.

Owen nailed it. An old gasket will often look like polished metal on top. A stout pick or awl or a small screwdriver to pick, pry and get between the gasket and the edge of the groove will usually lift it enough to get it started well enough to get it out, often in one piece.

Or come out like mine did in tiny bits and pieces. I finished it up with a short piece of hacksaw blade that would bend to the radius.Really tough stuff.

That was it!!!!!!! The place that overhauled the engine painted the gasket so it was Farmall red like the rest of the block. It was a bit tough to get the new gasket in, i.e. taking up the slack in the new gasket so it did not pooch up. But working the gasket around and around in the groove "scrunched" it to fit down into the circular groove. Thanks to Owen and the rest of you at YT
