I am restoring a '47 Farmall H and would like to return everything to original. The tractor now has the friction disc governor control. My parts manual shows a governor control sector and handle with the sawtooth cover. Was the friction disc control an add on aftermarket control? The friction disc will not hold a selected setting without creeping back. Should I purchase a replacement friction disc and spring or look for and install the sawtooth control? Will the original governor control rods attach to either type handle? Also, the exhaust manifold appears to be a replacement. The carburetor mount has elongated mount holes I presume for different size carburetors? Are there any original manifolds available or are most originals prone to cracks, warpage etc? Thanks for any infomation and advice. The information and knowledge from everyone on this site is excellent.

The friction disk style is accepted as a custom addition to the tractor. Extreme Correct police will complain some, but not much if they see it on a superior restoration. It probably just needs a stiffer spring from the hardware store, if not a new piece of old shoe lether cut into a disk. The saw tooth units can be OK for a few years, but they too become worn and slip. JimN

The original saw tooth governor control and my grandfather"s 1944 Farmall H took about 35 years to start slipping, and the tractor was used nearly every day year round for nearly all of those 35 years. B727, I just sent you an email.

OEM Tractor Parts sells the sawtooth throttle assembly for $68. That is the one I prefer. Will last forever on a hobby tractor.

Have used both. The friction disk can be tapped a bit to increase/decrease speed a little, unlike the sawtooth, which has steps between speeds. But...this is a nitpicking distinction. The original control is certainly prettier, and would be my personal choice for a first-class restoration. For a working tractor, the disk is just fine, and if you can make it stop slipping, why not stay with it.

Thanks for all the rapid and informative replies. I now know the sawtooth was the original control and the friction disc was an accessory control. For now I'll probably leave the friction disc installed as I have other items that require my money and attention (Bolster front end rebuild). I'm glad to have found an informative and helpful site as I'm sure I'll have additional questions as I restore and maintain the old H.

Randy,

Thanks for the great reference on the tear down photos. Extremely detailed and helpful. Much better than any manual I have studied. The Pictures of the front bolster rebuild will be a great help when I tear into my H. Thank you once again.
