Serial number is on the engine also, and if the engine is original, it will be the same as the tractor. Another way to come somewhat close is by the casting codes. Virtually every cast iron part on that M will have a code according to the month, day, and year it was made. The casting code will appear as 6* 20*T, for June 20, 1950. The letter designates the year. Letter I is 1939, J is 1940, etc. Find those casting codes and we can figure it out.

If the engine serial # is 190329 or higher I may be able to tell you what the tractor serial # it came in was. Within a few numbers anyway. If its a lower engine serial # can probably tell the month and year and maybe a little closer, depending on #.

I hate to question the first two gentlemen who responded. They are renown for their IH knowledge! However, I do not believe the engine and frame serial numbers are always the same on a M. They are usually close and the engine number can give you a close approximation to the year.

You misunderstood my answer. I didn't mean to imply the numbers were real close. Just that from the engine serial # depending on what it is that I could probably tell what month the engine was put in a tractor. From there I could at least tell what serial range and month the tractor was built. If engine serial # is higher than the number I posted I can tell what tractor serial # it came in 95% of the time. It also depends if the chassis and engine are original to each other. Date codes should be checked to get a idea on that. Late carburetor M tractors can have 13000 or more spread between engine and chassis. Older less or none.

serial# is the best way. I have a 400 Diesel and the serial # makes it a early 1955. Axle codes are Z which is a 54. Tractor was made in 1955 with parts from 54.

I have no problem with questioning the answer. Open discussion often leads to other answers.
Just wish my wife would use words like you do when talkng about me.
