Small Acreage Tractor

Hi guys! I am helping my sister look for a small acreage tractor...mostly to plow snow and move round bales. Might be some mowing with a finish mower too. What do you guys think of the IH 300 utilities? Any pros or cons of these tractors? How would it compare to a John Deere 1010 or Ford 861? Want a utility style tractor with live hydraulics and live PTO. Power steering would be a plus but not required. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

I have a 300 utility and like it fine. The weak point is the steering, tough to steer with a loader if it doesn't have power steering. In my estimation power steering is a must. If you find one that has a loader, the steering mechanism may be very worn and parts may be hard to find. If you could haul the bales on the 2 point in back that may be the best.

I like IH tractors, but I would be looking at something with a good 3 point set-up, they are just more versatile... the 300U can have a 3 point hitch adapted to it, but it's not the best of situations. Either a newer IH with an "on purpose" 3point or some other brand with one. Fords always had it and the 1010 has it. If the round bales are very big, I would want something bigger than those tractors anyway. Smaller bales, they would be okay... I know a lady with a 420 JD and it will barely handle small bales.

JD 1010 was a big problem child for JD so don't even think about it. A 300U is good if and only if it has power steering another problem child for IH. The Ford 861 was a good one and for the most part not big problems with it. But one you might also want to think about is the Oliver Super 55 has live every thing and is a good all around tractor but might be harder to find

I"m fairly happy with my IH544 which I use pretty much as you describe. I also have a Farmall 560 which is better suited to field work and a 8N which is convenient for moving a few squares bales or sacks of grain, carting around fence repair materials, etc.

Unless you like ancient iron for everyday use....find yourself a JD 2150 or even a mid '70's vintage JD 830....both are really fine machines and shouldn't break the bank to buy. They're old enough to be affordable, but modern enough to have the features you want. The Ford 3930 is a fine machine as well....a big improvement over the earlier 3910. A Massey 245 is another tough nut well worth looking into.

I'll vouch for that... I had a Super 55 for several years and probably a big mistake selling it. 550 is the same but later. Some had PS, but not a high percentage. They were way ahead of their time in features. Had a 10' M-F field cultivator, 6' blade and a 6' Ford flail mower and did custom mowing... great little rig. About 33 HP as I recall and draft control was the best in it's day.

Power steering is a must whether moving bales, mowing, or pushing snow. And especially for a woman.

3010's and similar sized tractors can be found for under 4-5 grand and at least you can mount a heat houser for winter use .

1010 JD isnt a prize winner,neither is the 2010 utility.Id go with a 460 Utility,they have more weight,not much bigger,6 cylinder engine.The little 861 is OK,but no live PTO.An 871 has live pto,but Selecto tranny,and they seem problematic
