6 volt genny or reg?

my tractor will charge after it sits for about a week or so at around 20 amps and goes down slow and once it hits zero it stops charging even with lights on. i think my volt reg is bad what do you guys think? it basicly charges when it wants. orignal gen i dont know when they added the regulator due to its a 43 and has the 4 position switch where the operator controlled the charging system

"at around 20 amps and goes down slow and once it hits zero it stops charging"

Sounds about right to me. Charge current decreases as the battery charges, and should reach zero when the battery is fully charged. The ammeter measures current into and out of the battery. When the lights are running on the generator, they aren't drawing current from the battery.

If you force current into the battery after its charged, you'll boil out the electrolyte and eventually destroy the battery.

Does the switch position affect the charge rate? If so, you have a cutout relay and not a regulator.

I agree with KEB1
If you measure the voltage (at 3/4 throttle) across the battery, you will know for sure. with the gen showing almost no charge, the voltage should be 7.2 to 7.4. If much lower than 7.1 it will be undercharged. JimN
