Farmall H electrical questions

Hi again all. I took a good look at the H today and I have a few more questions. Please bear with me.
1) There isn't a voltage regulator on the governor (still a 6-volt system) but there appears to be one on the steering support shaft under the gauge housing.
2) The negative cable from the battery is going to ground at one of the starter mounting bolts. The positive cable is going to the starter button, with the cable from there going to the starter and a smaller cable going (I'm guessing) to the ammeter gauge in the gauge housing)

Based on these observations, is the battery hooked up properly, and is the regulator for the generator as it should be? The ammeter does not work, nor does the battery charge, and the lights do not work/aren't hooked up. I was thinking of getting a complete wiring harness and going that route, but didn't know what I would need to replace as far as the voltage regulator to have it back operational and "stock". Thank you for your help. I could keep these tractors going without your help.

Different starting or lighting attachments were offered for the tractors so they may not all be the same. But for the most part I think H tractors from around serial # 34xxxx to 39xxxx mounted the regulator on the rear tank support. If you need to know the exact serial number breaks I would have to look it up.

It was originally positive ground, but that does not mean someone has not changed it to negative ground. Likely however, someone took the old battery out and put a new one in without noticing it was positive ground. The starter works right either way. Even though it is a DC motor.

Search the site for a wiring diagram. The old regulator may be OK but likely needs replacing. John T has given excellent charging system trouble shooting instructions many times.

Thanks for the replies. Glad to know the regulator is in the right place. I will plan on replacing it when I get a new wiring harness. About the negative ground, I"ve heard that if I change the battery back around I would have to repolarize the generator somehow, and someone else said it was a good way to blow the battery up. What would I need to do to be able to have it positive ground again?

Hook it up positive ground with all wires connected as normal. Make sure the Vr is for Pos ground, or either. When it is connected, do not start it!!!!! Use a piece of solid #14 copper wire to jump between the Bat terminal on the regulator, and the Arm (or Gen) terminal on the regulator. This will polarize the Generator. It will make a medium spark when doing this. Once that is done, it should be good to go. JimN
