Troubleshooting problem with 2400A IH

Cabooze

New User
I have an early "70s IH 2400A Series tractor that is not running properly under strain. It will idle without difficulties, but when put in gear and rolling, will slowly choke down till it dies. It will start back up immediately. It seems to smoke (fuel smoke) as it"s dying, but adjustments to carb have been futile. I have cleaned and adjusted the carb (Zenith), a number of times, and have been looking for rebuild kits, without success thus far. I have not ruled out a possible firing problem, but it doesn"t seem like fire is the issue. Does anyone have any insight on what may be causing my problem. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi believe 2400A is similar to 454. If this was a Diesel, I would tell you to check the fuel flow from the fuel tank. A common prolem with this model of tractor is junk in the fuel tank restricting flow out of the fuel tank. Usually have to drain tank and remove both shut off valves in bottom of fuel tank and clean tank and valves.

See if the fuel flow at the carb inlet fitting will fill a pint jar in less than a minute. If it will it is not the fuel. A bad condenser, bad point gap, or bad coil will also cause the issue. JimN

Thank you for your suggestions. Fuel flow from tank to carb has been checked and is satisfactory, so it may be a firing issue. I will examine firing and if there is still a problem, will advise.
