Electrical issues with my H

I have a H I bought several years ago. Everytime I want to take it to a show or out for a spin I need to charge it or hotshot it. I decided to see what the problem is and and now am more confused than before.
I have a three brush generator, a regulator with five wires connected to it and no markings and not grounded, lights that work but the switch is athree position switch with a four position marking.. second position is my back light (with the fronts on very dim) and the third is all lights on bright, when the tractor is running I only measure .4 to .8 volts at the generator. I have a service manual that I bought a while ago but it doesn't have any electrical drawings.
I need a set of drawings for this tractor, any suggestions?

the guy I bought it from did some rewiring and I would rather start fresh and see what is going on.
any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Follow the link to Bob's picture page and then click on #2 and see how that resembles what you have. 5 is way too many wires to have gobbed up around your regulator, so you may find as you sort it out that you've got some extras in there.

If you can get things wired up as shown and still have charging problems, come on back and we'll dig up the link to JohnT's troubleshooting guide.

If it has a 4 terminal (BAT ARM FLD LOAD) Voltage Regulator, it NOT any LHBD light switch controls charge rate (maybe it was upgraded to VR). On a VR the gennys FLD post wires to the VR FLD terminal NOT up to the LHBD switch

If so it will have 4 wires to it PLUS its metal case/frame needs a good ground usualy via its mounting to the genny, but it may have had an extra REAL ground wire???.....IT MUST BE GROUNDED TO WORK

Also someone may have ran an extra wire to its BAT terminal to feed battery voltage to the switch instead of it getting voltage off the ammeter. Its really suppoed to get that off the L terminal but it may be wired wrong!!!!!

You gotta get it wired right for 4 terminal VR use (Scotty gave ya Bob's Wiring Link) and then Polarize the genny n then if it dont charge use Bob M's Troubleshootign Flow Chart or my procedures. My Troubleshooting also tells how to wire a 4 terminal VR

and how do I know what the terminals are which if there are not marked anymore on the regulator, is there a internal drawing of the two relays and what terminals are which.the grounded terminal was not connnected to anything. I did push in one of the relays and the ampmeter went to full discharge.

There ought to be at least a single letter (B,L,A,G,F) if not other short indicators (BAT, L, ARM, GEN, FLD) stamped right into the pins on the regulator. Sometimes they'll be obscured by the terminals on the wires attached to them. Sometimes it might take a brushing with a stiff toothbrush or soft wire brush and a little cleaner to reveal them. It would be unusual, but you might find them marked under the cap instead of on the pins. If they're just plain not marked, it might be worthwhile to start with a new one.

I've replaced a few cutouts and relays, but not enough to recall or say whether there is a standard pattern (or two) for the pins. If there is, maybe somebody can chime in to describe it to get you going.

I made a drawing of what I have.. maybe it will make sence to someone that can set me straight..
