IH 674 Diesel - Blowing oil Update

I posted a message a about weeks ago about my IH 674 Diesel blowing oil out the vent tube. I changed the oil and filter yesterday (used rotella 15W40). Cranked easy as usual. Mowed some really heavy growth with the 6ft bushhog for less than an hour before the rain ran me in. Running in 3rd gear low range. Kept an eye on the vent tube, once up to operating temp there was a steady stream of oil drips blowing out. It blew out about 3 quarts in that short time. I have the early vent tube that is straight. From what I understand IH went to a tube with a up curve to avoid oil loss on hillsides. All this mowing was on pretty level ground. Don't know if changing the tube to the model with the up curve would help. A gallon of oil an hour is gonna break me. Other than running some more and keeping oil in it, don't know what else to try. Thanks

It sounds like you mat be getting alot of blow by past the rings and building up some pressure in the crank case.
Try finding a piece of hose or tubing and extend the vent pipe upwards a foot or more and then bend outward so rain water can't get in.
This might help let the oil run back to the crankcase before it can escape the tube.
Just a thought.

Went through the same thing on a 574 years ago. you can take the vent tube off and put a block-off plate on, then either find a valve cover with the vent in it or drill a hole in your valve cover for a grommet and put a push-in breather in it.

The parts diagram shows a filter inside the breather/vent tube. Would that be worth replacing?

TDM. Thanks so much for info. So this solved your problem on the 574? Does it work better/solve the problem due to it being higher up on the engine?

NO, this was a common problem on maybe just the early 74 series. I believe they didn't drill the oil return holes big enough and once the engine got to a certain wear point blow-by started blowing the oil out the vent tube. That's why IH came out with the vent made into the valve cover.

That was NO to the filter question.
Yes, the valve cover breather and blocking off the vent sovles the problem.

I would remove the vent tube and remake the tube to come out of the top of the sheetmetal. Then put a return bend (180 degree elbow) in the tube back down where it ended before. This allows the liquid oil to drain back into the crankcase, while the blowby is exhausted. I would not put an elbow at the bottom of the existing setup as it would fill the pipe with oil and block the vent. JimN
