I just purchased a 1941 Farmall(M)without prior viewing. I received the tractor from a family friend at a good price however upon receiving the tractor yesterday I noticed there were three factory holes in the hood. Can someone tell me if the hood my have come from another tractor. Not counting where the gauges are located, on the drivers side rear there is an additional two inch hole???

It may have been a kerosene burner and had a small starting (gas) tank that had a neck that came up through the hole in the hood. The tank could have been removed & discarded so long ago that nobody knows where it is. It also may have been like the '44 H we had, it was gas from the factory, but still had the hole in the hood, but no starting tank. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

If it is in front of the fuel filler cap, it is a hole for the starting gasoline tank. This tank was used on all distillate (tractor fuel), and kerosene tractors. The operator started the engine on gasoline, then switched to Distillate for reasons of economy (at the time, the tractor fuel was much cheaper than gasoline. It was also smelly and less powerful, but cheap ruled. Once started and warmed on gasoline, it was switched. When shutting it off, the Distillate was shut off and the tractor was allowed to run out of fuel. This allowed gasoline to be introduced into the carb to start it the next time. JimN

thanks for the information, i was told that the tractor was purchased new by the sellers now deceased uncle and stored in a barn all its life. Given this information i was leaning toward that fact that the tractor may have been delivered with the combo hood however never had that other equipment. the only thing that has me wondering though is that way the hood lines up and is secured. the front two hold downs work fine however the rear two don't seem to line up.

Tank mounts and radiator mounts can make the difference. They are not too particular in the line up area. JimN

you are prolly gonna need to loosen up the bottom radiator mountbolts, also there is a strut rod that goes from below the oil and temp gauge forward and bolts to a bracket on the radiator, with some wiggling and re-aligning, you should get a decent fit. someone prolly had the radiator off in the past and wasnt to concerned with lining everything up. tractor prolly has been majored a few times in it life. also check the serial number and see if it ends in X 1. that was the code for a gasoline tractor. if not, it was a distillate or kerosene tractorand did have the starting fuel tank originally.

The serial number of the tractor is FBK-33934 that appears to be the original tag on the side. I'm not sure what your refering to when you say ending in X1. Does the third letter in the serial number K refer to the fact that this was a kerosene tractor.

if your serial number was fbk-33934 x-1, as stamped on the id plate, that would indicate the tractor was originally a gasoline engine. with out the x-1 behind it , it was either kerosene of distillate. here are before and after pics of my 42 m. this was a kerosene tractor, you can see the small starting tank in the above photo, and then the small fuel cap on the hood in the lower pic. many of the old kero and distillate tractor were converted to gasoline when they were overhauled, adding a higher compression cylinder head.

FBK is the designation for Farmall M, K does not indicate kerosene. A serial number suffix of X3 indicates kerosene, X17 indicates distillate. However, I don't think those suffixes were used much on the H and M. X1 is gasoline, that suffix was probably on all gas only H's and M's, and is the main way of determining if the engine was gasoline or otherwise by using the suffixes.
