International A-1 Steering

What holds the big pivot shaft/pin that goes through the base and bolts to the bell-housing.?( I have it unbolted from the bell housing)I don't see any pins, keys or keepers. The CNH parts lookup doesn't show it. Thanks

TWheat: I assume your talking steering box, as the words bell housing are throwing me off a bit. My take on the word "bell housing" has always been "clutch housing".

I assume you are asking what holds the vertical shaft in place, within the gear box. I'm rusty on this, but as I remember a bolt or bolts hold the bearing up in place. I've forgotten how shaft is held in bearing, but it has to be a snap ring or cap screw above the bearing. It's close to 20 years since I had one apart, however something does hold shaft in bearing. I do remember the shaft and bearing come down together.

Hugh, you're correct, "clutch housing", not bell housing. The shaft I mean is the one on the A-1
and I assume other "heavy duty"(triangle shaped, not round) axles and runs on back to and bolts to the clutch housing . I want to remove that pivot shaft. Thanks

Hugh, I think he's talking about an AI with Industrial front end where the front axle pivot pin extends back to the bell housing for extra strength. Maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick, Sam

TWheat: OK, between you and Sam I think you have me straightened out. I thought you were talking about the vertical shaft within the gear box. I best bow out as I know very little about that brace with the industrial front end. I never had one.

I'll also take the time to straighten you out. You said International A-1, should have been A-I, there is a difference. There is an International A-I and an International A-I-1 There is also a Farmall A-1, all different. You did contribute, ever so slightly to my confusion, ,more than slightly was my 67 year old dead brain cells. At least that is what the Doc. told me after a recent MRI, no anurism, no cancer, just normal dead brain cells for a 67 year old. Heaven forbid, I'm loosing my tractor brain cells.

Hugh, no problem, I'm 72 goin on 100. I start typing and brain takes a break. Reminds me of something I just read about some one. "He has three levels of brain lighting, Dim, Flicker and Out,
Tim

Tim: What I find more annoying than my brain, is not being able to do some of the physical things, I once did with ease.

All of the aforementioned defects become more pronounced by the time you turn 78. Very frustrating. Sid.

Sid: I have a cousin, about your age. Sent me an e mail one day suggesting old age sucks. He though maybe it would be better if the life cycle were reversed, going all the way back to the fun that created him.

I wrote back, suggesting being that fun might not be as exciting as having the same.
