crack repaired block on Super C

As I was cleaning off the grease on my Dad's Super C in preparation for a complete engine overhaul, I noticed that the block had a crack that had been repaired. The weld is about a foot long running horizontal about 3 inches below the head on the manifold side. I don't believe it ever leaked, but I am a little leary about sticking about doing a overhaul with that block. You guys have a lot more experience than I do and would appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks,
Tom

there are a lot of engines out there that are still running due to cracks being welded up, it just means someone forgot to drain the water in the fall and cold temps cracked the block. its been running a long time now with the weld on it and will probably run a long time yet once rebuilt.

If it was me i would just look for a new block or just buy a C that doesnt run. I bought one last year it was complete but didnt run for 200 dollars.

That was a commons spot for the 113/123 block. I presume it was caused by a freeze-up, but don't know for sure. If the weld has been holding up, I wouldn't worry about it. There's a lot of them out there like that.

I used a Super A for 9 years with a belly mower on it that had a repaired crack like this. Never caused a problem and never leaked.

I had a hard time finding a good block to rebuild for my Super C and had that crack and several up on the deck welded. It is working fine.

Like others have said, if it isn't leaking don't be afraid to use it.

Thanks. Yeah, it froze. As far as I know, it wasn't leaking when it was last run back in the eightys.
