New Farmall 450

Hey all I just purchased a Farmall 450 w/2000 loader today and I have a couple questions as I have never owned a tractor this new (57). When I disengage the live pto it makes a whirring sound, is this right? Do i use hy-tran or gear oil in the trans. Do i use regular hydraulic oil in the hyd. system or do I use hy-tran in that too? Do i run the TA in high or low for light duty normal operation? Thanks

Hytran in all but the engine. I think your tractor has a "seasonal disconnect" underneath. Try disconnecting it and see if the sound stops. You have a planetary PTO that turns all the time, unless the disconnect is used. When in use, the rear band keeps the shaft from turning, but the rest still rotates. Be sure the lever is locked in the forward position when off or it will slip. The front band engages the planetaries. Some will disagree, but you can run the TA in either position. Engage or disengage rapidly to prevent slippage. But for light duty you will probably use the TA in direct most of the time.

Most likely a 450 won't have a seasonal disconnect but it may have. Most run the pto in the engaged position if they don't need it as the planetery gears are turing at a lower speed than when disengaged, however, I would make a shield with a closed end over shaft if I was to do that. Also, the pto rear unit is a self contained unit so fluid is seperate from rear end. Often times it never gets changed. TA, your call, use it as needed. Direct drive has least amount of moving parts.

Thanks for the help. Not to sound dumb or anything, but direct in the TA is the high side right? I just have never owned or used a TA before.
