clutch in m

We have an farmallk 'm' tractor that we bought with a bad clutch. We replaced the clutch and it still doesn't have power to the rear wheels. The pto's act as they should(stop when clutch is pressed and start when it's released)and can find no johnson clutch or any obvious reason why it won't move.It has a 4cylinder gas engine and sat about 1 1/2 years. What am I missing?I am an automotive mechanic so reasonably sure clutch is installed correctly.

Does it feel like the shift lever is actually engaging some gears when you move it?

Does it possibly have an M&W "live power" hand clutch set-up? The M&W unit replaces the brake cover on the left side of the tractor, and should have a hand lever on it. If the left hand brake cover looks just like the right hand cover, then you don't have the M&W.

If the pto turns and would have power under load. Make sure the shifter and shift forks are actualy putting the gears in mesh. If so there's a broken main shaft near back or a shaft somewhere else on back. Bull pinion ,axle etc. Or ring and pinion striped, differential bad or bull gear and pinion striped. Most of them would make a noise or catch if tractor was rolled and I wouldn't bet on any one as the problem. You could remove brake covers or take adjusting bolt out on bottom of covers and stick a wire up to see if one side is turning and the other not to narrow it down. Don't know the climate your in. Have saw the shift forks rust until they wouldn't move on some that sit for years.

If the new clutch and Pressure plate were installed, there might be three bolts used for assembly in the rim of the PP that keeps it from being engaged. If it has a Belt pulley drive on it removing that will enable a look into the trans (easier if it just has a cover over the hole).
