Farmall MD stuck motor

I'm looking at buying a farmall MD i believe a 48, the motor is stuck. I have worked on the farmalls before, but undersand the MD is much more expensive to rebuild. anyone have any good places to buy engine parts?
has anyone rebuild an MD recently and wouldnt mind sharing how much it cost them?

I also have a 48 MD which runs good, but seeps oil from the head gasket on the gas side and leaks from other gaskets as well. I'm pulling the head as we speak to replace gasket and grind valves. Bates Corp. has a lot of the things you will need, number is 800 248-2955. As the other gentleman says, parts for these tractors aren't cheap and stuff can add up quickly. Good luck, these are fascinating machines An operators manual and service manual will tell you everything you need to know.

Bates had everything except the bearings last time I looked. (or maybe it was the center manin they didnt have.)Anyways, its expensive, and the center mainis NLA dealer, just NOS or used. Someone was selling them at one time, but I havent seen anything about it for a while.

why buy a stuck one when you can get a good running one very reasonable just watch ads you can get a good running one for $2000-$2500 all the time

the reason why im thinking about getting this one with the stuck motor is because it comes very inexpensive, and the tractor overall is in great shape, and all original. I'm from Maine and ive been watching the ads locally and these MDs are very rare in our part of the country. and if i buy from out of states shipping costs get to be expensive as well. My dad and I are thinking of the tractor as our first full restoration, something we could work on in spare time.
Also i have not seen this tractor spoke to the guy whos selling it this morning, he said he only tried to turn it over with the fan blade, is there a possibility that the compression is too high to be turned over in that manner?

mike,

first off the fan will never turn a md over or really even a gas m for that matter. get a hand crank to check for sure or rock it in 5th on the gas side orr put a pipe wrench on the pto. as for maine that is a great state for the md's smd's etc... i bought a stage 2 super md in norhten maine. he got it for 750 it ran, however very poorly. he spent over 3000 on it and it runs good now but im still not done yet. and have seen others for sale in that area on a regular basis. what i would do first is check and make sure that it is or isnt stuck. if its not check the oil for water pull the plug on the bottom of the pan and see if water comes out. if more then a half of cup comes out then pass. if there is oil in the rad. then pass. not to discurage you but they can be a real nightmare to get parts for and work on. yet they are really fun and neat tractors to work and run. they have a great sound and good power, i love mine and would not sell if for anything. just keep in there just alittle on the pricey side when compared to a gas one.

good luck

Andrew

Contact B and E repair parts. They have complete kits incl.allbearings for MD.Same quality as Clevite (discontinued 8 years ago MD material) and no china stuff for sure.See eBay and give in:Farmall MD.They are from Erwin,SD.

i have not seen a lot of them for sale. maybe im just looking in the wrong places. i see a quite a few gas M's and H's. I have never heard of the stage 2 tractors what are the differences?
as for the rest of the information i appreciate it. My dad is going to look at it this coming week. (as i am currently deployed) im not really discouraged about these tractors mainly because i want to take it on as a project will be the first MD i have ever worked around.

Also want to check out ID-6 industrial rubber tired tractors and TD-6 crawlers which use the same eng.I know of several in my area. One is a TD-6 with a busted final drive housing that runs like new which he offered me if I hauled off, with a t-6 parts machine. Hoss (central Maine)

I"m in the middle of an MD rebuild and it is UGLY.

-used block- $250 (mine was cracked)
-used head $450 (I went through 3 heads till I -found one that had the cracks repaired right)
-rebuilt head $800 with new valves/springs
-crankshaft ground to .030" undersize $600(I should have let the guy keep it for that bill!)
-crankshaft bearings $460 (NOS).
-rod bearings $150.
-new sleeves and pistons/rings- yet to buy ($1200 for NOS))

I"m about ready to give up and sell it all!

My advice-

Buy a running MD for $2500.

I won't presume wht your priorities are, but if it was mine, I'd I'd recommend you get off the fixation for NOS (ULTRA-premium goods these 50-60 years later) and you can shave QUITE a lot off the price and have superior-quality parts and just as reliable a machine when you're done.

Well, since we are not presuming anything here, new old stock is all that is left for parts on these MDs. Sure, you can get cylinder head valves from IH, but it isn"t cheap like the gas motors. I was just trying to give some worthy advice.

Zactly. $300 a hole is a hard pill to swallow but about the only option right now. And crank bearings is just nuts.
