Can someone please tell me how to set timing? Just had VA pump rebuilt and put on but cannot grt timing right. HELP!!

well did you make sure that you were in the compression stroke of #1 before you pulled the pump off . If you just pulled the pump off with out first setting it at 16 degrees BTC and also making sure that the timing lines in the pump were aligned then HUSTON WE GOT A PROBLEM HERE . So now Pull the pump back off go around to the right side of the tractor and remove the two 1/4 inch bolts on the timing hole in the bellhousing and remove the cover then put the two bolts back in the timing pointer to hold it in place Next i would remove the valve cover and make sure that you are indeed on #1 compression
Then line up the timing marks in the pump timing window and put the pump on and tighten everything down and she should be ready to rock and roll .

Question, is the VA pump the one you set timing with a dial indicator on the plunger as there are no marks and no window for that matter. The BR and CR pumps had marks like Vet says, not sure on the VA , or am I thinking of an even later model pump on that German engine.

The 826 has the line not like on the dodges cummins Pete you do not know how many times i have been to farms where the guy just pulled the pump with out setting it to the timing marks and just stuffs them back on
and then wonders why it will not go

Are you sure its a VA pump? I've only seen BR and CR pumps on IHC German diesels. The VA pump was used on newer Cummins engines.

Just looked at parts book and it shows a VA pump on the D-358 in an 886, but I wouldn't argue that is the model you set with an indicator or not.

I am doing too much posting tonight I guess, doubling up etc. I went down in my (library ) and dug out the manual for the Maxxum and it has the rotary bosch I was thinking about, that you time with indicator. We always referred to them engines as CDC engines, not wanting to give Cummins all the credit as Case was a 50 -50 partner in their development and ownership. Now all questioner has to do is figure out what pump he has I guess.

Thanks for your reply. Problem we discovered was the flywheel has 2 TDC marks and 2 10 degree marks. Once we got on the proper marks it fired right up!Thanks
